In the new timeline, David and Christina investigate their father's belongings when they find Ben's camera and David's alternate camera. David is erased from the timeline, though he accidentally leaves his camera behind. David reassures Ben of the danger of the machine and tells him that he must say goodbye to his son before destroying the blueprint and a vital component. In the dungeon, David encounters Ben, who recognizes him and realizes that he will eventually complete the Machine. While they are captured by David's crush Jesse Pierce (Sophia Black-D'Elia), whose car battery they used to power the device, they recruit him into their experiment. They successfully send a toy car back in time, but blackout the entire neighborhood. The group pulls the switch, activates a trapdoor, finds blueprints for a time travel device that Ben was developing called "Project Almanac", and builds a functional time machine. Seeing how he is reaching for the basement light switch in the reflection, David and his friends go to the basement, which is forbidden by his father.
He finds an old camera with a video recording of his seventh birthday party, in which he briefly sees himself in a reflection. Father Ben (Gary Weeks), an inventor who died on David's seventh birthday, in hopes of finding something David can use to get a scholarship, is filming himself all the time. Knowing his mother, Kathy (Amy Landeker), plans to sell the house, David sells his belongings to his sister Christina (Virginia Gardner) and her friends Adam Lee (Alan Evangelista) and Quinn Goldberg (Sam Lerner). High school senior and aspiring inventor David Ruskin (Johnny Weston) is admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology but is unable to afford its tuition fees.
